Thousands of stork’s white wings finding way to nest, with bewildered eyes and excessive worry for their bird babies, fun sounds of “cheep” among peaceful space and a stunning flooded forest, these are things can be seen about lively life of birds in tropical sanctuaries of South Vietnam.
Vam Ho bird sanctuary belongs to Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province, 120km from Ho Chi Minh city. From Ben Tre city, follow highway 885 to reach Ba Tri town, then turn toward Tan Xuan direction, travelers will arrive in Vam Ho, a typical ecosystem of the seaside mangrove forests in Mekong (Cuu Long) estuary.
Vam Ho is best beautiful in the afternoon (about 16h to 17h). At this time, from distant horizon, each tiny dot approaches clearer and clearer. A little later, thousands of storks flit under light of sunset then lightly land on the green cajuput jungle cover. Silent space is immediately broken through by thousands of bird sounds that brings a feel both noisy and peaceful of a good land where birds will build nests.
Bang Lang stork sanctuary is located in Thuan Thoi ward, Thot Not district, Can Tho city. As one of the biggest bird sanctuaries, it is the most renowned ecotourism site in Mekong delta.
There are two ways to reach it: by waterway, deliberately boating along Hau river, twisting through small canals then turning into the sanctuary; by road, moving along highway 91, passing over O Mon district, getting to Thot Not district, then transferring about 60km to reach Bang Lang bridge.

The sanctuary exploration can start at noon, contemplating small stork babies and lovely nests with eggs, or taking a long sleep among tranquil space. This silence is able to be easily disrupted by wing flapping sounds, cries of hungry young birds, or contention for a perch of gentle birds.
Tan Long stork garden is situated in Long Binh ward, Nga Nam district, Soc Trang province. Way to here as follows: from Nga Nam town placed in Nga Nam district, going along provincial highway 42 about 5km, travelers will see this garden. Apart from this route, it’s possible to get to here by drifting on a fresh canal meandering along highway 42.
This stork sanctuary has all kinds of storks, especially Western reef heron, the scarcest species in this bird site with a number of several hundreds of individuals. Besides observing life of storks, resting and relaxing, it is also a great place to enjoy locally rustic but delicious dishes such as “banh xeo” (Vietnamese crepes stuffed with shrimps, pork, green onion and sprouts), “bun xao” (stirred rice vermicelli), “bun nuoc leo” (fresh vermicelli), etc.
Bac Lieu bird sanctuary is sited in Nha Mat ward, Bac Lieu township, spreading on an area of above 285ha. It is a copiously and variously coastal mangrove forest featuring a natural flooded ecosystem.
At aurora or when twilight lets down, this bird garden is amazing with a picturesque sight, as each flock of birds in formation hovers on high then swoops down water surface before fluttering and soaring into the air.
The shortest way from Saigon to Cham Trim national park (Dong Thap province) is transferring along N2 highway about 140km. Depart from Saigon, make for Phu Lam roundabout, get into Ba Hom road, then move straightly on highway 10 to reach Duc Hoa. At Duc Hoa T-junction, turn left to get into provincial highway 9, travel on it about 3km then turn right into a soil road (cars can move on), come out to be on highway N2. Along N2, reach Thanh Hoa then move into provincial highway 829 and 844 to arrive Tram Chim.
As a biosphere reserve, the world’s 2000th Ramsar, it’s famous for attendance of sarus cranes (featuring red head and upper neck) classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. This site is not only to discover the world of different birds, but also to comtemplate and photograph glorious yellow flower covers.
